Who pays the most taxes?

This question is complicated and you can find many links that say different things. It's hard to know exactly what is correct. Here is one analysis that appears to be non partisan and tries to give a rather easy understanding of how all the Taxes tend to work. In it's analysis it showed the top 10 states that are considered regressive. "The study’s main finding is that nearly every state and local tax system takes a much
greater share of income from middle- and low-income families than from the wealthy.
That
is, when all state and local income, sales, excise and property taxes are added up, most state
tax systems are regressive.Fairness is, of course, in the eye of the beholder. Yet almost anyone would agree that the
best-off families should pay at a tax rate at least equal to what low- and middle-income
families pay. Virtually every state fails this basic test of tax fairness: as this study documents,
only two states require their best-off citizens to pay as much of their incomes in taxes as their
very poorest taxpayers must pay, and only one state taxes its wealthiest individuals at a higher
effective rate than middle-income families have to pay." "Texas Taxes on Bottom 20 Percent of Income Earners Fifth Highest in the Nation"

Mark Steven Szkoda I pay accountants to do my taxes, they charge a large amount for this but I end up saving money. The disenfranchised cannot afford an accountant so they either do it themselves or use a quicky instant cash place. They do not benefit from this process.

Debbie Ilunga I need some help here as I find many conflicting information...R&P Who does? Please give me some facts on this subject. Bryan posted Tax Foundation who's board is conservative and it shows the 1% pay the highest. He also posted some other links, advocating Fair Tax. What do you think about Fair tax? I posted this on my blog because of our debate, I truly want accurate information on the subject, is what I posted accurate? What is? I found that big businesses like Exon do not have to pay taxes..whats up?

What proponents of a flat income tax want you to overlook is all the other taxes which make up a much larger percentage of income for poor and middle class people than they do for the rich - sales tax, car tabs, excise taxes, entertainment ...taxes, social security/medicare/self-employment tax, etc. etc., because they tax all individuals the same, disproportionately hit those at lower and middle incomes. That's why a progressive tax is fair - higher marginal rates on income after the first $50K, $100K, etc., because those folks are paying a lower percentage of their income for all those other taxes. Forbes and Rand and company are depending on you being too ignorant of real total tax burdens at different income levels for you to know that, hoping you'll support them getting even richer with a more unfair tax burden falling on your shoulders. Of course, the disparity is compounded by access to accountants, etc., as Mark explains above.See More
